Air Conditioning and Heat Pumps
Teach Air-Conditioning and Heat-Pump Skills with Working Systems
Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Learning Systems help learners develop practical skills using operational HVAC/R equipment, industry-standard components, system controls, and diagnostic instrumentation.
Learners explore heating and cooling cycles, airflow, temperature and pressure measurement, system controls, building conditions, component testing, and structured troubleshooting across conventional and ductless heat-pump systems.
Connect System Operation with Real-World Performance
Amatrol’s air-conditioning and heat-pump trainers allow learners to operate, monitor, adjust, and troubleshoot working HVAC/R systems. Exposed components and system instrumentation help students see how refrigeration, electrical, control, and air-handling components work together.
System Operation
Operate air-conditioning and heat-pump systems in heating and cooling modes while monitoring refrigerant flow, pressure, temperature, airflow, and electrical conditions.
Residential Applications
Develop skills using conventional ducted heat pumps, air handlers, thermostats, ductwork, condensate systems, and residential mini-split equipment.
System Troubleshooting
Compare normal and faulted operation, collect measurements, interpret symptoms, isolate problems, and determine appropriate corrective actions.
- Air-conditioning and heat-pump operating cycles
- Heating and cooling modes
- Compressor, condenser, and evaporator operation
- Reversing valves and refrigerant-flow control
- Automatic and thermostatic expansion valves
- Pressure and temperature measurement
- Superheat and subcooling evaluation
- Thermostat and system-control operation
- Blower, air-handler, and duct-system performance
- Residential mini-split operation and communication
- Component testing and system diagnostics
- Heating and cooling performance evaluation
These learning systems support instruction using several types of air-conditioning and heat-pump equipment. Learners can begin with an exposed component-based HVAC/R system before advancing into conventional residential heat pumps and ductless mini-split technology.
- Component-Based Systems: Examine individual refrigeration, control, and air-handling components while observing the complete heating and cooling cycle.
- Residential Heat Pumps: Work with a condenser, air handler, electric heater, thermostat, ducting, condensate system, and related controls.
- Mini-Split Heat Pumps: Explore indoor and outdoor units, remote controls, communication circuits, sensors, reversing valves, and system fault codes.
The Environmental Applications Learning System allows learners to investigate how building and environmental conditions affect HVAC performance. When connected to a compatible air-conditioning and heat-pump trainer, students can measure the effects of changing conditions within a model residential structure.
- Insulation and heat loss
- Solar heat gain
- Humidity and air movement
- Lighting and internal heat loads
- Attic ventilation
- Heating and cooling load calculations
- Heat-pump sizing concepts
Select systems include Amatrol’s FaultPro electronic fault-insertion technology. Instructors can insert realistic electrical, mechanical, control, airflow, and refrigerant-system faults without physically rewiring or damaging the equipment.
Learners practice a systematic diagnostic process that includes identifying symptoms, reviewing system operation, collecting measurements, interpreting results, isolating the fault, and determining an appropriate corrective action.
These systems are designed primarily for high school HVAC/R and CTE programs, technical schools, community colleges, apprenticeship programs, workforce-development organizations, and industrial or facilities-maintenance training centers.
Programs can select an operations-focused system for introductory instruction or add residential, environmental, mini-split, and troubleshooting trainers as learners progress into more advanced applications.
