Motion control is used where conventional motor control, using discrete inputs and outputs, cannot achieve the accuracy needed to produce a product. This applies to a wide range of industries that need to meet market demands for greater system throughput and improved output quality and precision. Some of these industries include automotive, energy, medical, petroleum, printing, and packaging. A good example of motion control is an offset printing press that uses four motors to print four separate colors on a page and another motor to turn the feed roll. A motion controller sends acceleration and velocity commands to each motor to control its speed, torque, and rotor position. At the same time the motion controller monitors these parameters and adjusts the output as needed to create a legible color image on the page.

Hands-On, Job-Ready Skills for Solar Technicians

Solar Energy Trainers

The future of solar energy is strong. Solar energy is being used in a broad range of applications such as generating electricity or home and utility use, directly heating hot water for homes, supplying heat for home heating systems, direct power for remote electronics such as information signs, and more. This is leading to an increased demand for qualified Solar Technicians.

Solar Technicians require specialized job skills, combining electrical and plumbing skills with solar technology savvy. They face unique challenges in bringing solar technology to commercial and residential applications. Our programs allow students to build the knowledge they need as well as develop the hands-on skills required. Successful Solar Technicians incorporate many traditional technical disciplines like electric motor control, wiring, rotating machines, piping, pumps, power distribution, etc. along with more specialized skills in solar technologies like solar installation, PV and thermal system troubleshooting, and specialized solar piping and pumps.

"Green Technology is the application of the environmental science to conserve the natural environment and resources, and to curb the negative impacts of human involvement. Sustainable development is the core of environmental technologies." - Wikipedia

The field of "green technology" encompasses a continuously evolving group of methods and materials, from techniques for generating energy to non-toxic cleaning products.

The goals that inform developments in this rapidly growing field include:

  • Sustainability: meeting the needs of society in ways that can continue indefinitely into the future without damaging or depleting natural resources.
  • "Cradle to cradle" design as opposed to the manufacturers "cradle to grave" cycle by creating products that can be fully reclaimed or re-used.
  • Source reduction: reducing waste and pollution by changing patterns of production and consumption.
  • Innovation: developing alternatives to technologies - whether fossil fuel or chemical intensive agriculture - that have been demonstrated to damage health and the environment.
  • Viability: creating a center of economic activity around technologies and products that benefit the environment, speeding their implementation and creating new careers that truly protect the planet.
