The primary purpose of a valve is to direct the flow of fluids by starting, stopping, and throttling (regulating) to make modern processes possible. Valves are designed to withstand pressure, temperature and flow, and can be found in homes and industry across the world. Process operators classify valves by flow control elements, function and operating conditions (such as pressure, flow or temperature).

Our valve cut-aways show the internal working parts of four of the most commonly used valves in industry -- globe valve, gate valve, ball valve, and swing check valve -- as well as many more commonly used valves. These cut-aways have large openings into the valves to show the inner workings while maintaining enough structural integrity to keep the valves operational. These brass body valves come on a compact stand that will sit easily on a shelf or table surface.

The more common valves found in oil refineries and chemical plants are as follows:

  • Cut-Away Ball Valves (5006)
    • Starting and stopping a flow.
    • Quick opening and closing.
    • Not good at regulating or throttling.
  • Cut-Away Plug Valves (5005)
    • Starting and stopping a flow.
    • Quick opening and closing.
    • Not good at regulating or throttling.
  • Cut-Away Gate Valves (5001)
    • Starting and stopping a flow.
    • Not good at regulating or throttling.
  • Cut-Away Globe Valves (5002): Regulating or throttling a flow.
  • Cut-Away Check Valves (5004, 5003, 5007, 5010): Used to prevent reverse flow (back flow).
  • Cut-Away Needle Valves (5011): Regulating or throttling a flow.
  • Cut-Away Butterfly Valves (5020): Regulating or throttling a flow.
  • Cut-Away Safety Valves (5008): Designed to open quickly to excess gas or vapor pressure in side a vessel.
  • Cut-Away Pressure Relief Valves (5015): Designed to open slowly to excess pressurized liquid.
