Stokes LIMO Autonomous Mobile Robotics

Teach ROS 2, Programming, AI & Autonomous Navigation with LIMO
Stokes LIMO autonomous mobile robotics education system

The Stokes LIMO Autonomous Mobile Robotics Education System gives students a hands-on platform for exploring mobile robotics, programming, autonomous navigation, machine perception, and robot operating systems.

LIMO supports advanced learning in ROS and ROS 2, SLAM, visual SLAM, localization, obstacle avoidance, and autonomous navigation. Depending on the configuration, students can also explore robotic manipulation, simulation, and programming with languages including Python and C++.

Its compact size makes LIMO well suited for classrooms, computer science labs, robotics programs, engineering courses, and post-secondary research environments where students need direct access to a programmable autonomous mobile robot.

How Can Students Use LIMO?

LIMO allows students to connect software concepts to a physical robotic system. Programs can begin with mobile robot operation and programming, then progress into mapping, autonomous navigation, perception, simulation, and robotic manipulation.

ROS & ROS 2

Develop robotics programming skills using ROS, ROS 2, supported packages, and development tools.

SLAM & Mapping

Explore simultaneous localization and mapping, including SLAM and visual SLAM concepts.

Autonomous Navigation

Investigate localization, path planning, obstacle avoidance, and autonomous mobile robot behavior.

Programming

Connect programming skills to robot movement, sensing, decision-making, and autonomous operation.

Simulation

Use supported simulation environments such as Gazebo to develop and test robotic behaviors.

Robotic Manipulation

With Cobot LIMO, students can combine autonomous mobile robotics with a robotic arm for manipulation projects.

The LIMO ROS2 configuration is designed for hands-on learning in autonomous mobile robotics and robot operating systems.

  • Intel NUC computing platform
  • ROS and ROS 2 support
  • Gazebo simulation support
  • Autonomous localization
  • Autonomous navigation
  • Obstacle avoidance
  • SLAM and V-SLAM
  • App-based software control
  • Expandable platform with additional ports
  • Multiple motion modes
  • ROS packages and documentation

Remote controller is not included in the standard LIMO ROS2 configuration listed by Stokes Robotics.

The LIMO Classroom Combo provides a multi-robot environment for classroom instruction, team-based activities, and autonomous robotics projects.

The current Stokes configuration includes:

  • Qty. 4 – LIMO ROS2 robots
  • Qty. 1 – Simulation Table

This configuration is well suited for programs that want multiple student teams working with autonomous mobile robots simultaneously.

Cobot LIMO expands the mobile robotics platform by adding a robotic arm, allowing students to explore autonomous navigation and robotic manipulation within the same system.

  • Autonomous navigation
  • Obstacle avoidance
  • SLAM mapping
  • Integrated robotic arm
  • App-based software control
  • Supports ROS
  • Supports Python
  • Supports C++
  • Supports C#

Students can investigate applications where an autonomous mobile robot must navigate to a location and then interact with its environment using the robotic arm.

LIMO gives students a practical platform for exploring how autonomous mobile robots determine where they are, build representations of their environment, and move safely through a space.

  • Localization – Explore how a robot determines its position within an environment.
  • SLAM – Investigate simultaneous localization and mapping.
  • V-SLAM – Explore visual information as part of localization and mapping.
  • Navigation – Develop routes and autonomous movement behaviors.
  • Obstacle Avoidance – Program robots to detect and respond to objects in their path.

LIMO supports widely used robotics development tools that allow students to move beyond pre-programmed activities and begin developing their own autonomous robotic applications.

  • ROS
  • ROS 2
  • Gazebo
  • Python programming on supported configurations
  • C++ programming on supported configurations
  • C# support with Cobot LIMO
  • Robotics packages and documentation

Using both physical robots and simulation environments allows students to develop, test, troubleshoot, and refine autonomous behaviors while gaining experience with robotics development workflows.

LIMO can support learning across robotics, computer science, engineering, and autonomous systems programs.
